It starts with asking mum a different question

If you had a two-hour recording of a proper conversation with your mum… how valuable would that be?

When I asked dad to record his life story – he said yes.

When I asked mum to record her life story – she paused.

“Ah… my life story isn’t that interesting,” she said.

It confused me, and I'm not entirely sure why it is.

But it’s a pattern we’ve seen across our Reflections business – the service is much more popular with men than women.

The most effective way of changing minds is by flipping the question.

We ask: “If you had a two-hour recording of a proper conversation with your mum, an insightful chat about the most entertaining and influential periods of her life … how valuable would that be?”

And it’s unanimous.

“Invaluable.”
“Priceless.”
“I’d give anything for that.”

That’s the point. Capturing your story isn’t just for you. It’s for your kids, and their kids.

It’s for the day they can’t ask you questions anymore; for the details they never thought to ask while you were busy being Mum.

If you’re reading this and thinking about capturing a family member’s legacy, start with the women.

They’ve got the memories you don’t realise you’re missing (and let me know if you have a theory about the patterns we're seeing!)
